PROPAGANDA:

A NEW BREED OF IGNORAMUS, AND HE ALSO MADE FALSE TEETH.

Propaganda is a form of communication aimed towards influencing the attitude of a population toward some cause or position.

It is used, primarily, to influence an audience and further an agenda by presenting facts selectively, by lying, even by omission and using loaded messages or headlines to produce an emotional, rather than a rational, response to the information presented, in order to encourage a particular mindset.

<link> Australian Hospital Ship (AHS) Centaur was a hospital ship which was attacked and sunk by a Japanese submarine off the coast of Queensland, Australia, on May 14, 1943.

Of the 332 medical personnel and civilian crew aboard, 268 died, including 11 of the 12 nurses present.

<link> Public reaction: The media were notified of Centaur‍ 's sinking on 17 May 1943, but were ordered not to release the news until it had been announced in the South West Pacific Area's General Headquarters dispatch at midday on 18 May, and in Parliament by Prime Minister John Curtin that afternoon. News of the attack made front pages throughout the world, including The Times of London, The New York Times, and the Montreal Gazette. In some newspapers, the news took precedence over the 'Dambuster' raids performed in Europe by No. 617 Squadron RAF. The initial public reaction to the attack on Centaur was one of outrage, significantly different from that displayed following the loss of Australian warships or merchant vessels. As a hospital ship, the attack was a breach of the tenth Hague Convention of 1907 and as such was a war crime. The sinking of Centaur drew strong reactions from both Prime Minister Curtin and General Douglas MacArthur.

Curtin stated that the sinking was "an entirely inexcusable act, undertaken in violation of the convention to which Japan is a party and of all the principles of common humanity". MacArthur reflected the common Australian view when he stated that the sinking was an example of Japanese "limitless savagery". Politicians urged the public to use their rage to fuel the war effort, and Centaur became a symbol of Australia's determination to defeat what appeared to be a brutal and uncompromising enemy. The Australian Government produced posters depicting the sinking, which called for Australians to "Avenge the Nurses" by working to produce material, purchasing war bonds, or enlisting in the armed forces.

Sister Ellen Savage was the sole survivor of the 12 female nurses on board Centaur.

While the term 'propaganda' has become a negative reference by its association with manipulative and underhanded examples, in its original sense, propaganda was neutral and could refer to generally positive messages, such as public health recommendations, signs encouraging citizens to participate in a census or election and messages encouraging people to report crimes to law enforcement.

PROPAGANDA IS INFORMATION WHICH IS NOT IMPARTIAL NOR UNBIASED.

In this time, of 'twenty-first-century-media', propaganda has become a deliberate and systematic endeavour to shape perceptions, manipulate opinions, and direct social behaviour to achieve responses that further the agendas of corporate national governments.

More comprehensively, propaganda is defined as a systematic form of purposeful persuasion that influences the emotions, the attitudes, the opinions, and the actions of targeted audiences, for ideological, political and commercial purposes through the controlled transmission of 'one-sided-messages', which may or may not be factual, via 'mass-media-outlets' and 'direct-media-formats.

Propaganda organisations employ propagandists who engage in propagandism, the applied creation and distribution of these forms of persuasion.

A NEW BREED OF IGNORAMUS:

PLURALISTIC IGNORANCE AND THE FALSE CONSENSUS EFFECT.

In 'pluralistic-ignorance', people privately disagree but publicly support a belief, while the 'false-consensus-effect' causes people to wrongly assume that most people think like they do.

For instance, pluralistic ignorance may lead a student to drink alcohol excessively, believing that everyone else does that, while in reality everyone else wishes they could avoid excessive drinking, but no one expresses that due to the fear of being ostracised.

A false consensus for the same situation would mean that the student believes that most other people do not enjoy excessive drinking, while in fact most other people do.

Studies found that when explaining their decisions, participants gauged choices based on what they explained as 'people-in-general' and their 'idea-of-typical-answers'.

Although it would seem as if the two are built on the same premise of social norms, they take two very oppositional stances on a similar phenomenon.

THE FALSE CONSENSUS EFFECT is, that the individual will assume that the masses agree with their opinion concerning a certain issue and, therefore, think the same way they do when, in fact they don't.

PLURALISTIC IGNORANCE is, that the individual does not agree with a certain issue but goes along with it for fear of being ostracised, believing that the masses do not share their opinion when, in fact, they do.

AND HE ALSO MADE FALSE TEETH.
